Whiting High School’s students…

…have many labels, some of which are druggies, dropouts, and delinquents. Some people also believe that the girls attending Whiting have babies or are pregnant. This may be true for some of our students but not for the majority. The ratio is no higher than it is at Laramie High School. The students come to Whiting for various reasons--the reasons vary depending on the student. Some come because they have academic problems, others because they have family problems, and very few come because of drug problems. Our student body has outgrown our building. We have tried to get a new school before, but we have been turned down. I’m here to try to change the way people view Whiting and to get your support to help us find the area and room we need. Thayer Elementary closed down in 2004 and Whiting tried to move into the empty building, but a petition was passed around the nearby neighborhood to prevent us from moving in. The petition had several things on it which were untrue, and we were denied the empty building. It was turned into an office building and the space is being wasted. Whiting is the perfect size for an office building. So why don’t we just switch? Here are some pictures that show some of the problems with Whiting.

This is a picture of our library.

It is small and doesn’t have many resources for research papers. Research papers are an important part of academics. The skills learned when doing research papers will follow the student after they leave Whiting whether or not they go to college. As you can see there is only one bookcase in the library that has books that aren’t textbooks. So our research is done online. There is a lot online, but students need to learn how to use a library.

This is a picture of our Science room.

As you can see, it is small and there are 7 tables that can seat two people each. The seven tables are in a small area, which makes it hard for people to move throughout the room during class. Our Science room should be split into two separate rooms. A Science laboratory and a Science class room.

This is our small lab area.

It is consumed by our science animals and the hydroponic plant grower. There are five lab stations but there's only room for two to three students to be working in the lab area safely. Storage is another problem for our Science teacher. Other than the cupboards in the lab area, which are full, there’s also a closet that is jampacked full of science equipment.

This is a picture of our extremely small gym.

The gym is full of weight lifting equipment. The equipment is essential for our weight lifting class, which is a popular class among our male students. The equipment makes it hard for students to play basketball during lunch, and most don’t even bother anymore. I see this as a problem because students need the exercise, especially because Americans are becoming obese. Also our small gym has forced our P.E. teacher to teach his class at the Civic Center. The Civic Center’s gym is much larger than ours but is very dirty--even though we pay a lot to use it.

Also we can only use it during fifth and sixth period, which puts a crutch in our school’s activities sometimes. A gym is an important part of a school. It has so many uses, from dances and group projects to assemblies and presentations.

These are only some of the problems Whiting has. Here are some others. The wood shop is located on the 2nd floor above the Science room, making it hard to hear during 2nd and 3rd period. There’s limited space for storage for all the teachers. Student lockers are the smallest lockers possible.

We don’t have a cafeteria, so the breakfast is McDonalds’ style and has been all four years I’ve been at Whiting. It’s boring and students would rather eat fresh food. Also, not having a cafeteria has made it hard for Whiting to get a Culinary Arts program going and let’s face it, most Whiting students aren’t going to attend college so these programs are important to the students. Because it gives them skills in the work force so that they don’t have to work in fast food for $5.50 an hour.

Whiting has many accomplishments and we try to give back to the community as much as possible. We clean the Spring Creek twice a year. We've held fundraisers: one for the fire victims in 2003, and one for the Katrina victims in 2004. Also our students are exceptionally smart. In 2006 we had a science fair team that placed first at regional and second at state. Also we had two students win first place at the art symposium. This year everyone that entered into the science fair placed first or second at regional and one placed third at state. My point is that Whiting deserves a new school with more space so the students can flourish. So please join me in trying to get Whiting students the space they need.
